Product Information:
- How it Works:
- The 7.3L high-pressure oil pump – HPOP is a vital component of the HEUI fuel system. Its primary function is to deliver regulated high-pressure oil to the injector, enabling precise fuel injection.
- The Ford 7.3L HPOP is an axial piston pump with a swash plate. It contains 7 spring loaded pistons within a cylinder block; the swash plate is machined to a fixed angle which the pistons reciprocate as the cylinder block rotates.
- The Powertrain Control Module – PCM monitors the engine conditions sending pulse signals to the Injection Pressure Regulator – IPR to dynamically control oil pressure. The Injector Control Pressure – ICP Sensor monitors actual pressure and feeds data back to the PCM.
- Technical Note:
- Early 7.3L engines run a 15-degree swash plate which average 6.8cc flow per revolution.
- Later 7.3L engines (1999+) run a 17-degree swash plate which averages 7.2cc flow per revolution.
- The 7.3L HPOP is gear driven by the camshaft gear, it is not timed and is independent of the camshaft/crankshaft timing.
- Installation Note:
- Make sure that the drive gear is fully seated on the high-pressure oil pump before installing the bolt and washer. Otherwise, the drive gear may not seat properly, causing binding or slippage resulting in a no oil flow condition.
- Location:
- Front of the lifter valley behind the engine front cover using 2-bolts and mounting gasket.
- Pump Differentiation:
- 1994-1995
- Has anti-drain back plug located on the mounting face of the pump.
- 15-degree swash plate
- Has threaded screw style hose fittings
- 1995-1997
- No anti-drain back plug, has open port on the mounting face of the pump
- 15-degree swash plate
- Has threaded screw style hose fittings
- 1998-1999
- 15-degree swash plate
- Has quick connect hose fittings
- Later model 17-degree swash plate pump can be used
- 1999-2003
